Students Elect 2016-2017 ASG Officers with Record Turnout
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Connor Flocks was elected president of the 2016-2017 Associated Student Government and Maggie Benton was elected vice president in an elections runoff with record turnout of 3,641 students. Jase Rapert was elected secretary and Shelby Cormack was elected treasurer. The runoff followed a record-breaking general election, in which more than 5,000 students cast ballots.
Flocks, a junior marketing/economics major from Fort Smith, and Benton, a junior journalism/advertising and public relations major from Jonesboro, were elected in the runoff with 58 percent of the votes cast. Rapert, a sophomore business major from Fayetteville, won the secretary position with 61 percent of the vote. Cormack, a junior journalism/advertising and public relations major from Van Buren, earned 61 percent of the vote as treasurer.
Legislative candidates were selected by college in the general election. Seats unfilled in the general election will be elected on an at-large basis at the beginning of the fall semester. Elected Senators and Graduate Student Congress representatives for 2016-2017 are:

Additionally, students affirmed three ballot initiatives to be implemented, pending final approval of the chancellor.
Ballot issue #1 formally recognizes the Graduate Student Congress speaker as part of the Associated Student Government executive team. The Graduate Student Congress speaker will join the ASG president, ASG vice president, ASG treasurer, ASG secretary, and ASG chair of senate as a voting members of the Executive Committee. Students supported this with 3258 votes.
On ballot issue #2, 3,142 students voted to transfer legislative representation of the School of Law from the Senate to the GSC. Representatives of the School of Lwsought this change after determining that the work of the Graduate Student Congress aligns more closely with their experience as law students than does the Senate.
Finally, in passing ballot issue #3, students signaled their desire to adopt the Old Main Oath with ,3538 votes. The Old Main Oath is a set of morals, values,and beliefs upheld by University of Arkansas students, faculty, and staff to emphasize integrity, openness, and general principles of civility by defining common values for the institution.
