First-Year Students Encouraged to Get Involved as They Transition to Campus Life

The first year in college is considered a transition year. Each student's experience is unique to them as they deal with homesickness, find a social network, live with a roommate, or learn about academic expectations.

"Learning that occurs on college campuses is not just isolated to the classroom, but instead includes the application of that knowledge in various activities that enhance leadership, communication, and other life skills," said Lori Lander associate dean of students for the Division of Student Affairs.

The University of Arkansas class of 2020 is encouraged to get engaged in campus life the moment they step onto campus. Student Affairs began welcoming students to campus Aug. 11 and will continue with activities throughout the first two weeks of classes.

"We want to assist these new students in learning how to bridge the in-class and out-of-class experiences by becoming part of many groups and attending a large variety of activities," Lander said. "This year we have implemented new evening activities, Aug. 15-21, such as a movie night and an outdoor concert."

 First-year students are encouraged to participate in all events including the first ever Arkansas Kickstart program on Saturday, Aug. 20, and Sunday, Aug. 21. This event is designed to give students the information needed for success from sessions on academic recourses, engagement, making good decisions regarding alcohol, and more.

Also this week, more than 1,600 freshman women participating in sorority recruitment will join 10 chapters on Bid Day scheduled for Saturday. Recruitment for students wanting to join other Greek chapters will occur after classes start.

The official New Student Welcome will be on Sunday, Aug. 21, at Old Main followed by the After Party in the Union. This year the New Student Welcome will be broadcast live from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. on the Division of Student Affairs' Facebook page.

Traditionally popular events during Welcome Weeks include New Student Welcome & Burger Bash, Razorbash, Back to School Bingo, Academic College Welcome Events, UARK Cardinal Nights, and the Freshman Pep Rally. 

Welcome Weeks activities conclude on Saturday, Sept. 3, with the first Razorback home football game.
