Law and Art Join to Host Artist of The Fulbright Triptych

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Artist and Fulbright Scholar Simon Dinnerstein will be on campus Thursday, Sept. 22, for a presentation on his artwork The Fulbright Triptych, which has been on exhibit in William H. Enfield Hall on the third floor of the School of Law building since July 2014.

The three-part event is co-sponsored by the Department of Art in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Law. It will include a meet and greet with the artist at 4:30 p.m. on the third floor; a "Conversation" at 5:30 p.m. in the Al Witte Classroom (room 339); and a question and answer session with the artist at 6:30 p.m. near the painting.

The main event is a "Conversation" between Dinnerstein and Lynn Jacobs, distinguished professor of art history in Fulbright College. Jacobs is a specialist in Northern Renaissance Art and wrote Opening Doors: The Netherlandish Triptych (Penn State University Press, 2012).

Dinnerstien started the painting while on a Fulbright Fellowship in Germany in 1971 and completed it in 1974 after returning to the United States. He has called it a "visual memoir" of his Fulbright experience in the town of Hesse Lichtenau.

The piece measures seven by 14 feet and has been touring for several years. Immediately before coming to the University of Arkansas it was on display at the Germany Consulate New York at United Nations Plaza. When it leaves the university in the summer of 2017 it will go on a tour of several states, beginning at the University of Missouri's Museum of Art and Archaeology.
