Sigma Alpha Hosts 'Ag in the Community' Event at Springdale's Jones Elementary

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas' Sigma Alpha Iota Chapter recently hosted an "Ag in the Community" event at Jones Elementary School in Springdale.

The professional agricultural sorority made up of students in the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences hosted more than 200 students, parents and siblings at the school on Nov. 17.

"Ag in the Community" is an annual event Sigma Alpha uses to educate the public and promote agriculture. Alpha Gamma Rho, U of A's professional fraternity devoted to agriculture, assisted with the event.

"Everyone who came out really appreciated the fun and the food," Sigma Alpha philanthropy chair Taylor Webb said.

The group set up 10 booths for games, face painting, food, cow milking and home gardening.  

"I feel like the event went really well," Webb said. "I sat and talked to a few children while they ate and they were telling me everything they learned."

Webb said Jones Elementary School administers were impressed with the event and invited the sorority to come back in the future.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to Heifer International, Sigma Alpha's national philanthropy.
