FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – University Police records show that thieves are especially active in the days before and after Winter Break, on campus and pretty much anywhere you travel. Winter break travel has its own risks, as well. There are things you can do to make your holidays secure and safe.

Don’t give a thief the chance to steal from you

Whenever possible keep your belongings with you, or keep them secure:

  • Electronics: Carry them with you or keep them locked in your room or another secure location.
  • Bicycles: Use a U-Lock; cable locks are easy to cut. Better yet, Ask a friend to use their garage space, or lock your bike in your residence hall room or apartment.
  • Scooters: Make sure your column is locked, and try to lock your scooter to an immovable object so it can’t be carried away. If possible, store it in a friend’s garage.
  • Packages: These can be left outside for hours after delivery making them an easy target. To avoid this you can have packages delivered to a work address; ask a neighbor to pick up packages for you; or have packages delivered to your apartment office.

Tips for Safe Travel

Winter break is prime travel time, with a lot of people on the roads.

  • Check your vehicle before you go: make sure your fluids are topped off and tires are inflated, including your spare.
  • Fuel: when you get gas take your keys with you and lock your doors. It only takes a moment for a thief to steal you vehicle or what’s in it.
  • Music: don’t wear headphones or earbuds. You need to be able to hear sirens and other sounds of danger on the road.
  • Drowsiness: don’t drive when you are short on sleep – it’s almost as bad as being drunk. Find a safe place and pull in for a “power nap.” You can call the nearest police department and ask to park nearby. Never sleep on the side of a highway road.

UAPD wishes you a safe and secure holiday season.
