UAPD to Dedicate Conference Room in Honor of Long-time Director

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas Police Department will dedicate its recently upgraded conference room in memory of Lawrence J. “Larry” Slamons, the first director of the UAPD.
The dedication and reception will be held from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12 in the lobby of the Administrative Services Building on Razorback Road. The formal ceremony will begin at 2:15 p.m. The campus and public are invited. A reception and tours of the conference room will follow the dedication..
Larry Slamons joined the University of Arkansas in 1972, as director of the security department, but he was hired with the understanding that he would build a full-fledged police department for the University of Arkansas. He accomplished that goal in a mere eight years, with the university officially renaming the agency the University of Arkansas Police Department in 1980.
Slamons retired from the UAPD in 2007, and died on Jan. 12, 2016 at the age of 79.
