Bangladesh Student Organization invites students to attend International Mother Language Day at 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, at the Arkansas Union Theatre. Students can get their free tickets from noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 6-7, at the Arkansas Union Food Court.

International Mother Language Day is celebrated all over the world on Feb. 21 to promote peace, cultural diversity and multilingualism. The date corresponds to the day in 1952 when students sacrificed their life to establish Bengali as one of the state languages of East Pakistan (present-day Bangladesh). UNESCO declared this day as the International Mother Language Day on Nov. 17, 1999, and since 2000 it has been celebrated all over the world.

The celebration includes a presentation on the historic event that took place in 1952. There will be folk songs, poems etc. performed by students. Students will be served traditional Bangladeshi food. There will be trivia questions related to the historic event.

This event is free to current University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, students as supported by the Associated Student Government through the office of Student Activities and funded by Student Activities fee.
