Ginny Monk

Ginny Monk has been selected as the Student Leader of the Month for March. Originally from Pencil Bluff, Arkansas, Monk came to the University of Arkansas to major in journalism and is a member of the Honors College. She currently serves as the editor-in-chief of The Arkansas Traveler. Monk has stated that a large reason she became so involved was because she wanted to expand her journalism experience.

When asked what she thought a leader's most important qualities were, Monk said, "The willingness to do any job. A good leader should not ask anyone to do a job they are not willing to do. They should be willing to tackle even the smallest or most unpleasant task and to complete that task well." Monk also identified Isabel Dobrin as a mentor, stating that she leads by "example and gets things done."

Monk's advice to other leaders is to "Know your group." She stated, "Know how to they work and find the best ways to encourage them." Her favorite quote is from Dwight Schrute, "Whenever I'm about to do something, I think, 'Would an idiot do that?' And if they would, I do not do that thing."

The Student Leader of the Month award, sponsored by New Student & Family Programs, recognizes University of Arkansas undergraduate students for their excellence in leadership through campus involvement, leadership activities, or through volunteer and community service.  More information about the award can be found at the Student Leader of the Month page.
