Biomedical Engineering Students Present Posters at Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium

On April 19, students in the Department of Biomedical Engineering presented posters at the Department's annual Undergraduate Research Symposium. Designed as a way for undergraduate students to showcase their ongoing research, the Symposium featured 17 posters this year. Each poster described the introduction/background, methods, results, and conclusions of a project performed by a student in conjunction with his/her peers and professors.

In presenting their posters during the symposium, students also fielded questions from faculty members about the research work being showcased. Courtney Hunter, a graduating Senior of Significance, presented a poster titled "Detection of leukocytes stained with acridine orange using unique spectral features acquired from an image-based spectrometer."

She said, "It was wonderful seeing years worth of independent projects coming together for one event. The department does such diverse and exciting research, and that really shined through in each poster."

Added Raj Rao, professor and head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, said, "The presentations showcased the significance of promoting undergraduate student involvement in our research programs. Some of our students work on collaborative projects that involve multiple labs, and sometimes across colleges and are thus trained on all aspects of executing a research project, under able guidance of our faculty."
