Civil engineering students put their engineering skills to the test during the American Society of Civil Engineers' 2017 Mid Continent Regional Conference on April 21-22, which was held at the University of Arkansas.

During the conference, students competed against each other and against the clock, building steel bridges, racing concrete canoes, constructing geo-walls and bowling five frames with homemade concrete bowling balls. Awards were given for each event, as well as a Spirit Award and a Technical Paper Award.

The University of Arkansas placed second in the Geo-Wall category.  

Four hundred and seventy students from 14 universities from around the region competed. In addition, 30 judges and 50 volunteers helped with the event.

"The ASCE conference planning team, headed by Allyson Ritchie, did an amazing job preparing for the 2017 ASCE Mid Continent Regional Conference and executing their plans. ASCE greatly appreciates all of the faculty, students, and volunteers that assisted with the conference.", said Colton Horn president of the U of A's ASCE student chapter. "ASCE also appreciates the support that was given by numerous companies and individuals. The ASCE conference would not have been possible without everyone's hard work and support."
