Schulte Awarded SEC Visiting Faculty Grant to Host University of Missouri Assistant Professor

Stephanie Ricker Schulte, associate professor in the Department of Communication at the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, and Julie Passanante Elman, assistant professor in the Department of Women's and Gender Studies at the University of Missouri, were recently awarded a Southeastern Conference Visiting Faculty Travel Grant.

The SEC Visiting Faculty Travel Grant Program is intended to enhance faculty collaboration that stimulate scholarly initiatives among the conference's 14 member universities. The program provides faculty from one SEC university the opportunity to travel to another SEC campus to exchange ideas, develop grant proposals, and conduct research.

Elman, whose research program specializes in disability studies, feminist and queer theory, science studies, and U.S. media and cultural history, will travel to the U of A this spring to collaborate with Schulte on a proposed interdisciplinary special issue of Feminist Media Studies. Specifically, the proposed issue will analyze the relationship between mobile media and citizenship. During her visit, Elman will also present her current scholarship to U of A students and faculty at a research colloquium.

"The Department of Communication looks forward to hosting Dr. Elman," said Robert Brady, chair of the Department of Communication. "We believe this grant will strengthen our department's strategic plan to develop and promote communication research."
