Jim Stoppani

Jim Stoppani, owner of Sports Nutrition Dietary Supplements JYM and an authority on strength training, will give a presentation titled "Strength Training Science in the New Millennia: Busting Old Training Myths with Dr. Jim Stoppani" from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, in the Graduate Education Building auditorium, Room 166, on the University of Arkansas campus.

Stoppani holds a doctorate in exercise physiology from the University of Connecticut with post-doctorate training from Yale University School of Medicine.

The talk is free and open to the public but registration is requested by emailing hydrationscience@gmail.com.

There are many rules and beliefs in fitness that seem to be based on sound science; yet, when the true and current science is exposed, they no longer hold up, according to Stoppani, including:

  • You can't and shouldn't train a muscle every day.
  • Fasted cardio burns more fat.
  • Cardio needs to be done separately from weights.
  • Doing 8 to 10 repetitions per set is the "sweet spot" for muscle growth.
  • Working out once a day is enough for health.
  • Be careful of overtraining.

These topics and others will be covered and broken down.

Stoppani will stay to meet people after the talk.
