University Libraries to Host 'Reveal of the Ferial Psalter' Oct. 18

Join University Libraries and Medieval and Renaissance Studies for the grand reveal of a recently acquired Ferial Psalter from 15th century Bohemia from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, in Carnall Hall. Joshua Smith, Mary Beth Long and Lora Walsh of the English Department will offer remarks. Those interested are encouraged to RSVP to specoll@uark.edu

The Special Collections department regularly seeks input from U of A faculty regarding collection development to determine what kinds of resources would be most beneficial to researchers. Professor Joshua Smith recommended the Ferial Psalter for the instruction and scholarship of Medievalists on campus.

The complete work of the Ferial Psalter comprises 263 folios on vellum, with 13 illuminated initials, and is believed to be the first complete publically available medieval manuscript in the state of Arkansas. It is anticipated that the university community will use the manuscript heavily in Medieval studies, English, art history and history courses.

"The Special Collections department is thrilled to add this manuscript to its holdings," said Lori Birrell, head of the department. "This acquisition is a wonderful illustration of the kind of partnership we seek to develop with our faculty and students. We greatly appreciate the support and interest of the Medievalists on campus and look forward to working with them to integrate this rich resource into their teaching and research endeavors."
