UREC Sports Complex Open with a New Artificial Turf Playing Surface
The beginning of intramural flag football and the resumption of club sports practices signals the completion of the renovated UREC Sports Complex at the University of Arkansas. The sports complex, located at Mitchell Street, offers over 9 acres of programming space that features four multipurpose intramural turf playing surfaces, one multipurpose club sports competition playing surface, and two sand volleyball courts.
During open recreation hours, access to the playing fields will provide opportunities to play pickup games and check out sports and fitness equipment, which was not possible at the previous facility. Opportunities for recreation at the complex include participation in sports such as flag football, soccer, lacrosse, rugby, softball, sand volleyball and ultimate Frisbee. By offering amenities such as wireless internet access and a covered patio, the complex serves as a hub for student engagement and recreation beyond sports.
The complex will be open for open recreation programming hours on the following dates:
- Friday, Oct. 27, 1-9 p.m.
- Saturday, Oct. 28, 9 a.m.-9 p.m.
- Sunday, Nov. 5, 1-5 p.m.
- Friday, Nov. 10, 1-9 p.m.
- Saturday, Nov. 11, 9 a.m.-9 p.m.
- Sunday, Nov. 12, 1-5 p.m.
- Friday, Dec. 1, 1-9 p.m.
- Saturday, Dec. 2, 9 a.m.-9 p.m.
- Sunday, Dec. 3, 1-5 p.m.
The new sports surface offers durability and performance for programming events. Composed of a slit film fiber construction, 42-ounce face weight, 2-inch pile height, and tufted fabric construction, the turf surface can withstand back-to-back programming events with no need for the recovery time once experienced with traditional grass turf. With a built-in drainage system, the fields can be used regardless of rainfall, offering greater flexibility in program scheduling.
Along with the improvements in playing surface capabilities, the UREC Sports Complex found itself under brighter conditions with the installation of LED lighting fixtures. The energy efficient fixtures offer a brighter light and less light spill when compared to standard metal-halide fixtures.
All U of A students and UREC members have access to the UREC Sports Complex.
