John M. Brooks, a lecturer in the sociology department, is the latest United We Win contributor to win in the campaign's weekly prize drawing, taking home a gift basket courtesy of the U of A School of Law.

Brooks is one of thousands of faculty and staff who have contributed to the U of A United Way campaign, which ends on Friday, Nov. 3.

A final drawing will be held Thursday for a Dell laptop computer, valued at $1,500 and provided by IT Services. Everyone who contributes by turning in a donor card or going online at https://unitedway.uark.edu is eligible to win.

The campaign goal is to raise $160,000 for the United Way of Northwest Arkansas, which supports 31 agencies and 38 programs that help local children living in poverty. So far about 56 percent of that goal has been raised, about $90,000.

The contributions work: 96 cents of every dollar goes to these programs, and a recent census report estimates that the number of children living in poverty in Northwest Arkansas has dropped from 27,000 to 21,000 in a single year.

That number of children -- 21,000 -- is still much too high -- but every contribution makes a difference.
