Duncan Selected to Present at 2017 Midwest Clinic

Jamal Duncan, assistant director of bands in the Department of Music, will give a juried presentation on Dec. 20 at the 71st Midwest Clinic International Band, Orchestra and Music Conference in Chicago, Illinois.

Duncan will co-present a clinic entitled Quality is Never an Accident with Armand Hall, associate director of bands at the University of Memphis, and Leah McGray, director of instrumental studies at SUNY Geneseo. 

The clinic will provide educators with user-friendly techniques to evaluate repertoire. The presentation will include a demonstration of these techniques using middle and high school repertoire.

"Repertoire selection is one of the most important tasks for music educators" said Duncan. "The choosing of quality repertoire is the basis of a student's musical development and I'm honored to share my thoughts at such a prestigious conference."

Founded in 1946, the Midwest Clinic focuses on bringing international music directors into contact with not only the best-published music, but also with new and established teaching techniques, and the latest products and services for music educators.

Over 17,000 people from all 50 states and more than 30 countries attend the conference each year. 

About the University of Arkansas Bands: The University of Arkansas Bands Program, part of the Department of Music in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, began in 1874 and is one of the oldest band programs in the country. The program has seven ensembles including the Razorback Marching Band, Hogwild Band, and five concert bands with over 400 student members representing every college at the university.
