Aubree Hawley

The American Society for Nutrition has selected Aubree Hawley, a graduate student in the Department of Food Science, as a blogger for 2018-2019. As a blogger for the society, Aubree's role will be to help increase the visibility of the American Society for Nutrition in web search results and among the nutrition education community as a resource for commentary and insight.

She will submit at least four blog posts during the year on hot topics in nutritional science that will be of interest to fellow ASN members, including students, young professionals, health care professionals, and consumers.

Hawley is committed to debunking myths about nutrition and fad diets. Hawley said, "Social media and the internet have created a culture of self-taught nutritionists who often give advice that can be detrimental to health. Nutrition and food science are exciting topics, and I plan to use my ASN blog posts to explain nutritional science in a manner that educates and creates a passion for further learning. It is important to provide the information needed to take nutritional concepts and apply them to improving public health and quality of life."

Hawley graduated from the University of Arkansas with a bachelor's degree in dietetics while running track for the Razorbacks. She joined the Food Science Department as a graduate student in fall 2016, as a member of professor Jamie I. Baum's laboratory. Hawley's research focuses on the role of dietary macronutrient content on mechanisms of energy metabolism, muscle function, and well-being during aging.
