Free Showing March 13 of Documentary Chronicling Adult Learners' Challenges

Night School, a film by Andrew Cohn, will be shown free at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, in Room 343 of the Graduate Education Building at the University of Arkansas.

Cohn will be in attendance to speak with the audience after the film. The event is sponsored by the University of Arkansas Education Renewal Zone and the Northwest Arkansas Writing Project, which are both based in the College of Education and Health Professions. Refreshments will be provided.

Cohn tells the story of two adult learners in Indianapolis, which has one of the lowest high school graduation rates in the country. For them, earning a high school diploma could be a life-changing achievement. Cohn won an Emmy for his film, Medora, which was part of PBS' "Independent Lens" series.

The screening is part of the Literacy, Equity, and American Creed series that is additionally co-sponsored by the Brown Chair in English Literacy in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences and the Northwest Arkansas Writing Project. Literacy scholar Deborah Brandt will conclude the series at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19, with "Literacy in America: Is Writing a Right or a Resource?" in the Chemistry Lecture Hall.
