UA Inspirational Chorale Gives Annual Passion Week Performances
Join the University of Arkansas Inspirational Chorale as it presents what has quickly become a beloved spring tradition: The Passion According to Inspire.
Under the direction of Jeffrey Allen Murdock, the ensemble will present two performances at the Jim and Joyce Faukner Performing Arts Center, at 7:30 p.m on Thursday, March 29, and Saturday, March 31. Tickets are now on sale through the Faulkner Center box office and are $20 for general admission, and $10 for students, faculty and staff.
The concert is a retelling of the last week of the life of Christ with drama, costumes and Gospel music. The concert features works by urban and contemporary gospel artists like Kirk Franklin, Kurt Carr and Richard Smallwood, music from the joyful and playful musical The Greatest Showman, and music from the rock-based, musical Jesus Christ Superstar.
The Inpsirational Chorale's take on the Passion is designed to not only educate the audience about the story of Easter and why Christains celebrate it, but to also tell the story in a way that is refreshing, interesting and relatable to the ensemble and current times.
Director Jeffrey Murdock said, "This is quickly becoming a favorite tradition of the Inspirational Chorale. Historically speaking, this time of year is one of great celebration. It is my pleasure, and the pleasure of these student-musicians, to bring the Passion to life with Gospel music and drama. It's unlike anything you've ever seen!"
About the Ensemble: The mission of the Inspirational Chorale is to keep the black sacred music tradition alive. The ensemble provides a forum where university students, regardless of ethnicity, can perform the various genres of the tradition. The Inspirational Chorale — as an integrated part of the department of music, the academic community, and the community at large — has enjoyed an illustrious reputation while performing for dignitaries and heads of state. The ensemble has made appearances at national and international conferences and has taken international tours to Beijing, China, and Kilkenny, Ireland.
