Over-the-road driver turnover is one of the biggest issues the transportation industry faces, with turnover rates at 100 percent, compared to about 15 percent in most industries. Long work hours, poor work conditions and strenuous driving requirements among the contributing factors to the issue, Melton said.

As the U.S. economy grows, driver turnover and shortages will continue to worsen, causing idle equipment, poor customer service and increased recruitment costs, all hurting business.

About the presenter: Melton works for the logistics division of Walmart in Bentonville, and spent 12 years at J.B. Hunt Transportation Services Inc. He earned his doctorate in industrial engineering and management from Oklahoma State University in 2012, with a concentration in supply chain management and logistics. Since then, he has taught Operations Management, Transportation Strategies, Advanced Forecasting and Inventory Management, Engineering and Business Statistics, and Goods and Services at the undergraduate and graduate levels at the University of Arkansas. He's been teaching online since 2015, and joined the Arkansas faculty as an adjunct professor in 2013.

Join Melton for this free webinar at noon CST Thursday, April 19, to hear his insights about how to solve the problem.
