School of Art Presents M.F.A. Thesis Exhibition of Lauren Whitmore: 'Turning Tides'
The School of Art at the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences is pleased to announce M.F.A. Thesis Exhibition featuring Lauren Whitmore: 'Turning Tides.'
sUgAR, the University of Arkansas Student Gallery, is currently hosting Whitmore's thesis exhibition through Friday, April 13.
Turning Tides is an exhibition that Whitmore designed to scrutinize how power structures deeply ingrained in society could potentially generate an environment that the abuse of power goes unchecked.
Whitmore explores the transgressions of the abusers, in hopes to favorably change the survivors narrative as one of immediate acceptance rather than skepticism. She uses textiles as a medium and metaphor with the intent to demonstrate that abusers are pervasive in all aspects of life.
The artist encourages audiences to consider how they are a part of these social structures and how cultural contributions could alter outcomes.
Whitmore does share that this exhibition deals with issues of abuse and assault that may be sensitive to viewers.
Her exhibition encompasses one of the most important lessons she says she learned as a M.F.A. student, letting go of preconceived ideas of what art is or could be. She said that by trusting her instincts, using best suited techniques and seeking guidance as needed, she simply could make what she needed to make.
"I feel as though my time at the School of Art gave me invaluable opportunities to study, create and teach all of which I will carry with me for the rest of my life," said Whitmore.
She said that her classes have influenced her practice and future endeavors. Her life's ambition is to be an educator and artist.
Whitmore looks to relocate to the St. Louis area enjoying family and friends while looking for a job within the arts community.
It has been an exciting spring featuring the thesis exhibitions of M.F.A. candidates from the School of Art. Whitmore is the last candidate to showcase her years of work through,Turning Tides.
The sUgAR Gallery hours are Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
