'Fake News' to Be Topic of Science Café on April 17

University of Arkansas professors Pearl Dowe, Larry Foley and Chris Goering will discuss "Fake News: How Do We Know What's What?" at the next U of A Science Café.

The event takes place from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, at Powerhouse restaurant in Fayetteville.

Dowe, chair of and associate professor in the Department of Political Science, helps students understand how racial stereotypes and white supremacist attitudes figure into what news people find acceptable and believable.

Foley, chair of and professor in the School of Journalism and Strategic Media, teaches budding journalists the importance of verifying information with multiple sources before reporting it as news.

Goering, associate professor of English education, recently co-edited a book describing ways teachers can help their students learn critical media literacy.

Science Café is sponsored in part by the U of A chapter of Sigma Xi research society, the American Chemical Society and the Arkansas Biosciences Institute.

The event is open to the public, free of charge, and held in an informal restaurant setting as a time to sit, relax and chat about the topic of the night. Food and drink for purchase will be available.
