U of A Professor Answers Questions About School Segregation at Writers' Conference

Patrick Wolf, holder of the Twenty-First Century Chair in School Choice at the University of Arkansas, took part in a panel discussion at the Education Writers Association annual seminar last week at the University of Southern California.

Wolf's panel discussed "Understanding Public School Segregation Data" for reporters who cover education. The meeting was the 71st annual national seminar of the association. Wolf, two other academics and a representative of Vox Media talked about answers to the question, "Are schools in communities around the country becoming more segregated?" A representative of the Hechinger Report moderated the discussion.

"We talked about how we are doing in integrating America's schools, ways to measure integration, the data available and what policies could be put in place to improve the situation," Wolf said.

The seminar is the largest annual gathering of journalists on the education beat. The multiday conference provides participants with top-notch training delivered through dozens of interactive sessions on covering education from early childhood through graduate school. It provides participants with deeper understanding of the latest developments in education.

Wolf directs the School Choice Demonstration Project based in the College of Education and Health Professions. It's a national team of researchers, institutional research partners and U of A staff. The project evaluates school choice programs and other school improvement efforts across the country, including choice programs in Washington, D.C., Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the state of Louisiana.
