Global Series Kick-Off in Holcombe Hall With India and Pakistan

​Discover India and Pakistan during this month's Holcombe Global Series.

The presentation starts at 8 p.m. today in Holcombe Hall's living room.

The evening will be a combined presentation of three American students and one international student who will talk about the unique history of India and Pakistan.

Rashi Ghosh, an Indian-American student, will specifically present on her Indian heritage within an American context.

"At first people might find it strange to see India and Pakistan presented together, but this is because people have forgotten that at one point in history, that's just what India and Pakistan were — together," Ghosh said.

"It is important to talk about these two beautiful countries together, as a reminder of the peace and unity that once was, and could be again, regardless of politics, religion, society, etc."

Looking past those differences shows that the two cultures are quite similar, she said.

India and Pakistan are south Asian countries that were joined until separated after World War II. Partition came in 1947 and conflict ensued with more than 14 million people displaced on religious grounds with Muslims heading to Pakistan and Hindus and Sikhs to India. Both countries are home to large populations and diverse landscapes.

Ali Husnain, an international student from Pakistan, will share his culture, focusing on the country's history, as well as song and dance.

"We are better at so much more than math," Husnain​ said, referring to a common American perception of people from Pakistan and India.

This event is open to all within the university community. Attendees are encouraged to bring friends and engage with the presenters after the presentation.

Global Series is an on-going program and India and Pakistan marks the kick-off event for the fall semester.
