University of Arkansas Police Department Receives Advanced Meritorius Accreditation

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. conducted an in-depth review of the University of  Arkansas Police Department earlier this year, grading the department’s adherence to 484 industry standards. The UAPD was awarded “Advanced Meritorius Accreditation.” This is the eighth time the agency has been reaccredited since first receiving their accredited status in July 1995.      

“The internal systems that CALEA helps us develop assists this department tremendously in making better informed management decision to meet the needs of the community we serve and that of our employees,” said UAPD Director Stephen Gahagans. “I’m  especially proud of our officers and staff for their commitment and professional dedication.” 

The University of Arkansas Police Department was the first law enforcement agency in the state to become accredited. Since then eight additional agencies in the state have earned accreditation.   

CALEA was created in 1979 as a credentialing authority through the joint efforts of four major executive law enforcement associations.

CALEA’s goals are to:

• Strengthen crime prevention and control capabilities;
• Formalize essential management procedures;
• Establish fair and nondiscriminatory personnel practices;
• Improve services delivery;
• Solidify interagency cooperation and coordination; and
• Increase community and staff confidence in the agency.
