Help Create a Living Piece of Art on Oct. 17

Beta Psi Omega, the nation's professional biology fraternity, will be creating a temporary, living art installation using yeast in the Arkansas Union Connections Lounge on Oct. 17. The University of Arkansas chapter of Beta Psi Omega invites students and faculty to come by and add their touch to this collaborative and dynamic art piece from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a species of yeast used by humans for thousands of years to brew wine and beer and bake bread. This yeast normally grows in an off-white color, but a genetic mutation called "ade2delta" disrupts normal metabolic pathways and results in yeast with a red color. Using toothpicks, students will be able to draw on agar plates using either white or red yeast. This yeast will grow and mix on the plates over the three-day display, creating a piece of living artwork.

This event is supported by the Student Activities Fee as a funded event by the Associated Student Government and is free to all currently enrolled University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, students who pay the student activities fee. For questions about the event or for accommodations due to disabilities please contact Zachary Renfro, ztrenfro@uark.edu , 479-601-2941.
