Volunteers Wanted for a Type 2 Diabetes Research Study

Are you 18 to 69 years old and been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes? This study is conducting a research about characteristics that can predict how much blood sugar (glucose) changes during exercise in people with type 2 diabetes.

Volunteers complete a single 30-minute session of aerobic exercise (walking on a treadmill) after eating a provided standardized meal. Blood sugar is tested immediately prior to exercise, after 15 minutes of exercise, and after 30 minutes of exercise using a small sample of blood taken from the finger. Your participation will require you to be present on 3 separate days that will be scheduled over the course of 3 to 4 weeks:

  • On day 1, we will determine whether or not you are eligible for the study.
  • On day 2, your physical fitness will be measured while you pedal on a stationary bike.
  • On day 3, you will complete the aerobic exercise session.

The total length of time to complete this study is about 2 hours. While you will not be paid for participating, participants will learn how their blood sugar changes during exercise and will receive free testing of hemoglobin A1c, glucose (blood sugar), triglycerides, and cholesterol using a small sample of blood taken from the finger.              

This research is conducted under the direction of J. David Taylor of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Department of Physical Therapy and the University of Arkansas Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation and is approved by the UAMS and University of Arkansas Institutional Review Boards.
