University Libraries Join Open Textbook Network

The University of Arkansas Libraries joined the Open Textbook Network as part of the effort to reduce the cost of textbooks for U of A students. Through the network, the University Libraries will now be able to offer U of A faculty resources through the Open Textbook Library, as well as specialized training sessions on the use of Open Educational Resources.

Since 2017, the University Libraries and Global Campus have partnered to create the OER Course Materials Conversion Program, offering compensation to faculty who reduce the cost of textbooks for their students by adopting, adapting or creating open educational resources for their curricula. There are three levels of compensation: $7,500 for OER creation; $4,500 for OER adaptation; and $3,000 for OER adoption. Instructional designers and Libraries faculty are available to assist successful applicants with the creation and implementation of their materials.

"Providing an affordable, high-quality education to our students is of the utmost importance to the Libraries," said Carolyn Henderson Allen, dean of Libraries. "By providing faculty with technical support, open education expertise and financial compensation, we can improve the quality of materials used in U of A courses while simultaneously reducing the financial burden on students."

Faculty interested in applying for the OER Course Conversion Program should schedule a pre-application consultation no later than March 1 by completing this form. Applications are due March 8.

"Joining the OTN is evidence of our strong commitment to increasing OER advocacy at Arkansas," said Elaine Thornton, open education and distance learning librarian. "We are excited to join the other network members and looking forward to hosting an OTN workshop for U of A faculty on campus next fall."
