Architect Rick Joy to Present 'Taking the Time' Lecture March 12 in Little Rock
The architecture of the Amangiri Resort and Spa retreats into the rocky landscape of Canyon Point, Utah, through its dense materiality, staccato volumes and striated horizontal profile.
LITTLE ROCK – Rick Joy will present a lecture at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, at the Arkansas Arts Center, 501 E. 9th St., in Little Rock. The lecture, titled "Taking the Time," will follow a 5:30 p.m. reception.
This lecture is part of the Architecture and Design Network's 2018-2019 June Freeman Lecture Series.
Joy, FAIA, is principal of Studio Rick Joy, a 32-person architecture and planning firm established in 1993 in Tucson, Arizona. From the beginning, the firm's works have been exhibited and published extensively and have won numerous awards.
This lecture will explore notions of place seeking, place reading and place making through descriptions of Joy's core values and examples of the work of Studio Rick Joy.
Studio Rick Joy has realized architectural works throughout North America with extensive experience with lifestyle-based projects from numerous single-family residences to an ultra-luxurious resort and large-scale master plans. The office has several active residential commissions in New York City, Long Island, and Turks and Caicos. The firm is currently completing the prestigious commission of the new Train Station and Campus Gateway Buildings to Princeton University, a luxury resort hotel with private compounds in Mexico, an apartment building in Mexico City and a new luxury boutique hotel in Austin Texas.
Joy received the 2002 American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Architecture and, in 2004, won the prestigious National Design Award from Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. He periodically serves as a visiting professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
The 2018-2019 June Freeman Lecture Series is sponsored by the Architecture and Design Network with support from the Arkansas Arts Center, the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design, the Central Arkansas section of the Arkansas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and community members.
The lecture is free and open to the public, and no reservations are needed.
