Look Before Stepping Into a Crosswalk; Drivers, Too, Must be Ready to Stop
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – U of A campus crosswalks can be dangerous if people aren’t paying attention, especially in the first days of a new semester, as everyone adjusts to a new environment.
It’s state and city law that drivers must yield to a a pedestrian in a street crosswalk. That doesn’t mean pedestrians can count on a driver to stop when they step into the road.
If you’re walking you owe it to yourself to look up from your phone, or pause in a conversation to check for traffic before you enter a crosswalk. It’s just as a matter of personal safety. Make eye contact with an approaching driver before you enter a crosswalk.
Keep an eye out for bicycles as well, in traffic or in the crosswalk, not to mention the occasional skateboarder.
