Program in Creative Writing and Translation Welcomes Assistant Professor in Fiction

Bryan Hurt

The Program in Creative Writing and Translation, a nationally-ranked M.F.A. program in the Department of English, welcomes novelist Bryan Hurt, who joins the faculty as a tenure-track assistant professor this fall.

Hurt received his Ph.D. in Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Southern California and a B.A. in English and German from Ohio State University.  

His work has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and named finalist for the Calvino Prize and Horatio Nelson Prize in Fiction. His novel, Everyone Wants to Be Ambassadorto France (2015) won the Starcherone Prize for Innovative Fiction, and he is the editor of the anthology Watchlist: 32 Stories by Persons of Interest.

"Our creative writing program has consistently attracted the best emerging writers, and we meet their potential with an outstanding faculty," said Davis McCombs, director of the Program in Creative Writing and Translation. "We are thrilled to welcome Bryan to the program. His ideas about fiction and teaching the craft of writing are fresh and innovative, and we know our students will thrive under his mentorship."

Hurt's research and teaching interests include fiction writing, nonfiction writing, screenwriting, contemporary fiction, experimental writing, the 18th-century British novel, publishing and editing, and the process of writing. He comes to Arkansas having most recently served as an assistant professor at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio.
