Communication Professor Wins Freedom of Expression Award
Freedom of Expresssion (Oxbridge Research Associates, 2019)
Stephen A. Smith, professor emeritus in the Department of Communication, has won the Franklyn S. Haiman Award for Distinguished Scholarship in Freedom of Expression from the National Communication Association.
This prestigious award recognizes outstanding published research on freedom of expression in the United States and abroad. In Freedom of Expression: Foundational Documents and Historical Arguments (Oxbridge Research Associates, 2019), Smith provides a comprehensive and inclusive anthology of readings that guide scholars through freedom of speech and First Amendment issues.
Through more than 188 artifacts and texts, Smith introduces and examines a breadth of issues, including early legal codes, correspondence between Madison and Jefferson on the First Amendment, and the debates on anarchists and socialists. This foundational text covers centuries of effort in the journey of exploring freedom of speech and press issues at home and across the world.
The Haiman award is one of two honors Smith will receive during the 105th meeting of the National Communication Association in Baltimore in November. He will also receive the Wallace A. Bacon Lifetime Teaching Excellence Award at the conference.
