University Recreation Functional Training Space Set to Open in the HPER Building

The department of University Recreation is hosting an open house at its new functional training space, located on the first floor of the HPER Building. The open house is scheduled for from 3-8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9. There will be featured demonstrations on how to use the new equipment, as well as giveaways.

"We recognized a need to have a dedicated space for our members that provides functional training opportunities," said Jeana Carow, assistant director for facilities. "This space is beneficial in creating an environment to explore new ways to move and play."  

This space has battle ropes, slam balls, jump boxes, kettlebells, dumbbells, VertBalls, Core Bags, TRX, and a Thai boxing bag. The hours of operation will follow the HPER Building hours. The space is available for any U of A student and UREC member to use. It will be staffed from 3-9 p.m. Monday through Friday in order to provide assistance with the new equipment and to answer any questions participants may have.

"I like it because I feel like I can do more fulfilling workouts in the space — it's a lot easier to do full body workouts," said Anna Dudek, senior kinesiology major. "Plus, I just really like all the new equipment, especially the tire flip!"

University Recreation also encourages attendees to tour the second and third floors of the HPER Building during the open house as renovations have been underway since early July.
