School of Law Celebrates National Pro Bono Week
Law students and local attorneys answer legal questions online during pro bono service project.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Students in the University of Arkansas School of Law are participating in a nationwide celebration of pro bono during Pro Bono Week, Oct. 20-26.
Events at the University of Arkansas include two pro bono legal services projects, a hair care product drive, giveaways, a pro bono opportunity fair and networking events for law students.
On Friday, Oct. 25, law students will volunteer with attorneys from the Center for Arkansas Legal Services to provide legal assistance to domestic violence survivors seeking to divorce their abusers.
On Saturday, Oct. 26, law students will volunteer alongside local attorneys to assist qualified immigrants to become naturalized citizens. The service is a project of the law school's Immigration Clinic and the Hispanic Women's Organization of Arkansas.
A haircare product drive will be held throughout the week for clients of the Peace at Home Family Shelter. Donation bins will be in three locations on the first floor of Waterman Hall: the Norma Lea Beasley Entrance Hall, the law student kitchen and outside the University of Arkansas Legal Clinic office. They are seeking donations of new haircare products for all hair types:
- Full sized shampoo and conditioner
- Brushes and combs
- Children's hair accessories
- Ties, clips and headbands
- Curling and straightening irons
- Hair dryers
- Hair oil, crème, spray, mousse, gel
- Hair coloring kits
Law students who have performed the most pro bono hours are invited to "Dessert with the Dean," to celebrate their accomplishment with School of Law Dean Margaret Sova McCabe at her home. The school's top 10 pro bono students are Lexi Acello, Ashley Bacon, Maria Baez de Hicks, Kara Butler, Laura Edmonson, Tony Jones, Sara Koch, Anna Tanselli, Sabrina Worsham and Maisie Manuel.
About Pro Bono Week:The American Bar Association Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service launched the initiative in 2009 because of the increasing need for pro bono services. The nation-wide celebration provides an opportunity for local legal associations across the country to provide high quality legal services to those in need.
