Studio Engineering Course Through Community Music School and Haxton Road Studios

The University of Arkansas Community Music School is thrilled to announce a new course in studio engineering through a partnership with Haxton Road Studios in Bentonville and the Department of Music. The course is a 10-day intensive hands-on training experience in the fundamentals of audio science, microphone technique, recording technology, tracking, mixing, and mastering. Consisting of five days on the University of Arkansas campus and five days in Haxton Road Studios, the course is taught by veteran audio engineer Michael Curtis and Haxton Road Owner and record producer Neil Greenhaw.

The Department of Music previously worked with Haxton Road Studios in spring 2018 as part of a large-scale departmental recording project in which over 150 students and 21 faculty recorded 38 tracks. Both UAMusic and Haxton Road have spent the past year focusing on creating a pedagogical partnership.

"We are thrilled to partner with local talents like Haxton Road Studios to foster learning and training to bring new curricula to our students and the community. Partnerships like this are so important to highlight and use Arkansas resources to prepare our students for an ever-changing musical world," said Ronda Mains, chair of the Department of Music.

"Recording technology and knowledge of studio situations are crucial for 21st century music students of all disciplines and aspirations," said jazz area coordinator Jake Hertzog, who worked on the partnership. "This is the first time our unit has been able to offer access to a high-end recording studio where students can learn the art and science of audio engineering."

This effort marks another step forward for the University of Arkansas in the field of audio engineering, along with a new course in live sound coming in spring 2020, details to come soon.

The CMS course titled "Studio Recording & Audio Fundamentals" will be offered for the first time during the January Intersession, and registration is now open.
