Samuel Binns Named Buffalo National River's Artist-in-Residence
Samuel Binns, a poet in the M.F.A. Program in Creative Writing and Translation, received an Artists 360 award from Mid-America Arts Alliance earlier this year.
PONCA, Ark. – Samuel Binns, a poet in the M.F.A. Program in Creative Writing and Translation, will serve as the Buffalo National River's artist-in-residence this winter. Binns will be staying in Jasper, Arkansas, writing, creating art, and leading activities for the public.
In coordination with Buffalo National River ranger Lauren Ray, Binns will offer creative activities at two interpretive programs coinciding during the residency that revolve around themes of personal reflection and renewal.
On New Year's Eve, Binns will lead a creative activity to help guests experience a star-studded conclusion to 2019. On January 1, 2020, another ranger-guided hike will begin at 1 p.m. at the Lost Valley Trailhead near Ponca. Buffalo National River Partners will serve warm beverages at the pavilion and Binns will offer an optional creative activity for hike participants.
Binns will complete volunteer work as well as create art to be shared with the National Park Service and its visitors. As both an artist and a poet, Binns plans to create limited edition postcards printed from hand-carved linoleum blocks. Binns will donate several finished pieces to the park's collection. At the end of his residency, Binns will also coordinate presentations of his work at local libraries and community venues.
Although the Buffalo National River's Artist-in-Residence program is in its infancy, it serves to bolster fine arts opportunities in the rural communities surrounding the national park.
