UA Greek Leaders Spreading Holiday Cheer in Northwest Arkansas

Members of campus sororities provided shopping options for 15 families.

Christmas came early for several local families in Northwest Arkansas this past week.  

"Before leaving for winter break, we wanted to spread some holiday cheer in hopes to put smiles on children faces during this season," expressed Merrell Nelson, president of Panhellenic. It was a complete joy to see their excitement."

The University of Arkansas Greek Life community provided 15 families with an opportunity to shop for gifts. 

"It was really sweet to come together as a community to give back around the holidays. We all had so much fun helping the kids to pick out gifts and warm clothes," shared Carolyn Smith, president of the Alpha Delta Pi Chapter.

U of A Greek governing councils and several chapter officers served as "Santa Elves" which included more than 50 student leaders.  Collectively, these organizations purchased more than $7,000 worth of toys, car seats, diapers, clothing, electronics, personal items, and food. 

"These families were so surprised. There were a lot of tears of joy and happy smiles that made our night," stated Parice S. Bowser, director of Greek Life.  

This event was organized by the Panhellenic Council and its members organizations as well as the Interfraternity Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and the United Greek Council. 

"We would like to thank several local churches, Fayetteville and Springdale Public School Districts who connected us with the various families," stated Delayne Coleman, president of the National Pan-Hellenic Council. "This also includes our local Walmart stores located on Joyce (Fayetteville) and Thompson (Springdale) for their tremendous support as well."
