Chris Choi Solo Exhibition

Chris Choi is a cross disciplinary printmaker that uses the practice of photography to capture portraits of individuals that are marginalized by America. Through the process of digital manipulation, he adds layers back on top of portraits to reference the process of screen printing and metaphorically reference the barriers theses individuals struggle to conquer.

"This series focuses on creating sculptural installation with the intent of being photographed for the camera. With the camera, I choose what information is revealed and concealed to the viewer through the framing of the image and focusing on particular sections of the installations or sculptural object. The reveal and conceal of the object acts as a metaphor for how we choose to present ourselves publicly versus privately, and the risks involved in revealing too much." — Shelby Fleming

"I am always wrestling with the idea of perception, whether it be someone else's or my own. I use an arts-based research framework to destabilize definitions on black women in visual culture. I bring elements from my past and my present to inform my process on being, existence, and becoming by incorporating images of myself at different times in life. Through this practice I seek, to be more vulnerable with myself and not let fear get in the way of seeking out the things I want to create." — Leah Grant
