Two University of Arkansas professors in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences recently co-published a new book on Mardi Gras that explores how the culture and customs of a city foster its rebirth.

Leslie A. Wade, a professor and playwright in the Department of Theatre, and Robin Roberts, professor in the Department of English and the Gender Studies Program, along with Frank de Caro, professor emeritus at Louisiana State University, co-authored the book together.

From their disciplinary perspectives of theatre, literary and gender studies, and folklore, the authors examine six unique, offbeat, downtown celebrations.

Using ethnography, gender studies, folklore, cultural studies, and performance studies, the authors analyze new Mardi Gras' connection to traditional Carnival.

The narrative of each krewe's development is fascinating and unique, illustrating participants' shared desire to contribute to New Orleans' rich and vibrant culture. With 42 color illustrations, the book brings Mardi Gras celebrations vividly to life.
