U of A Speech and Hearing Clinic Offers Audiology Services to Community

Did you know that 466 million people worldwide have a disabling hearing loss and it's estimated there will be over 900 million people in this group by 2050?

The World Health Organization has estimated that untreated hearing loss costs $750 billion globally each year due to health costs, loss of productivity, and societal costs.

Even a mild hearing loss can impact communication and cause frustration for the individual and frequent communication partners. In 2011, Dr. Frank Lin of Johns Hopkins University and his colleagues found that individuals with a mild hearing loss were twice as likely to develop dementia and those with a severe hearing loss were five times as likely to develop dementia. Research has indicated that untreated hearing loss is linked to cognitive decline, increased rates of depression and anxiety, and decreased quality of life. Hearing health impacts brain health.

Dr. Margie Gilbertson, Ph.C., CCC-SLP/A, is dually certified as a speech-language pathologist and audiologist and is leading the charge of providing audiology services at the University of Arkansas Speech and Hearing Clinic, part of the College of Education and Health Profesions.

Gilbertson graduated from Memphis State University in 1991 with her doctoral degree. She has been working in the field of audiology for 37 years. Gilbertson has been serving the Northwest Arkansas area for six years. Gilbertson specializes in working with adults with hearing loss. She is experienced in working with individuals and their families to determine which hearing technology option best fits their needs.
