The third season of the "Live at the Five & Dime" concert series continues online with a piano concert featuring Alan Gosman playing Johannes Brahms's Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel.
The concert can be accessed at any time by visiting the Five & Dime page.
The Brahms piece, composed in 1861, is one of the great variation sets for the piano. It begins with a seemingly simple 16-bar theme by Handel.
Brahms follows this with 25 variations on the theme that encompass an enormous range of musical styles, expressive moods, and pianistic techniques. And while some composers would have exhausted the possibilities for variation here, Brahms concludes with a stunning and virtuosic five-minute fugue.
Gosman is an associate professor of music theory at the University of Arkansas. He has published on Beethoven's sketchbooks and compositional process, musical form, canons, and links between performance and analysis. He is a pianist and also used to conduct.
Gosman co-founded the Live at the Five & Dime series and has organized the music since it began. This is his first time taking part as a performer.
The Live at the Five & Dime series is a collaboration between the Department of Music, the Walmart Museum, and Downtown Bentonville Inc. It is typically an outdoor series, but has moved online this season. There have been more than fifty concerts in the series.
