University of Arkansas to Participate in Annual First-Generation College Celebration Day on Nov. 9

The University of Arkansas will recognize first-generation college students during the annual First-Generation College Celebration day on Nov. 9. This day of recognition celebrates the experiences and hard work of all current and former first-generation college students.  

The First-Generation College Celebration is recognized across the country each year on or around Nov. 8, marking the anniversary of the signing of the 1965 Higher Education Act, which has helped millions of first-generation, low income/under-resourced students persist to degree completion. The celebration is coordinated by the Center for First-Generation Student Success, which is an initiative of The Suder Foundation and NASPA, Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education.  

The University of Arkansas celebration is being coordinated by New Student and Family Programs in collaboration with the Student Success Center, the Center for Multicultural and Diversity Education, and faculty working with Destination Arkansas.  

"I think now, more than ever, it's important that we recognize these students and bring together resources and a network to support this community," said Matt Meyers, assistant director of New Student and Family Programs. "Finding these resources is especially important for our newest students as they begin their college journey."  

This year, the celebration will be held virtually. New Student and Family Programs is collecting short videos with messages of support and celebration from first-generation college students, whether they are faculty, staff, alumni or current students. They are also collecting videos from first-generation supporters or allies.  

These videos will be assembled into a video compilation for the First-Generation College Celebration. 

Video submissions and messages of support should be submitted through a HogSync Form by 5 p.m. on Oct. 19. Instructions for video content and format can be found in the form. 

"These stories and messages of support will make this day special for all of our first-generation students," Meyers said.
