Anti-Mexican Violence in the 20th Century: Historical Lessons for Today
The Latin American and Latino Studies Program presents a talk by Monica Munoz Martinez, associate professor of history at the University of Texas, Austin, on the larger forgotten history of anti-Mexican violence in the United States.
Martinez will draw on research conducted for her award-winning book, The Injustice Never Leaves You: Anti-Mexican Violence in Texas (Harvard Press, 2018) and her work as a founding member of Refusing to Forget, a non-profit organization that calls for a public reckoning with the history of racialized violence in Texas.
Citing specific examples from 1919, she will also discuss why anti-Black and anti-Mexican violence by police persisted without reform.
