New SafeZone App Launched to Help Community Feel Safe On Campus

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Keeping the University of Arkansas safe is more important than ever. With the launch of the new SafeZone app, the campus community can be directly connected to UAPD in the event of an emergency or just to feel safer when walking across campus.

In conjunction with UAPD, SafeZone is available to all students, faculty and staff to provide reassurance that anyone on campus can receive a prompt response from the police team when you need it.

SafeZone can be downloaded straight to your phone and allow  you to get in contact with UAPD wherever you are on campus. But what can it do?

The app allows you to raise multiple types of alerts:

• Help – for when you need non-emergency assistance
• First Aid Call – for when you need medical assistance
• Emergency – if you feel threatened or need urgent assistance.

The app can also be used for:

• Check-in / Check-in Timer – Walking alone? Working or studying in an isolated area? Share your position with UAPD for your personal safety.

UAPD

The app will also help the UAPD public safety team work more efficiently, giving a real-time view of where other officers are. The app will allow UAPD to respond to an activation with the nearest resource in the quickest time possible. When an activation is raised, it is received on a map in the UAPD Communications Center and to other officers, allowing them to respond in the most effective way.

Enabling SafeZone

To register SafeZone on your phone, please follow these 3 easy steps:

1.Download the SafeZone App from your phone store using the link below:

2.Launch the app and enter your UARK email address (e.g. {name}@uark.edu)

3.Complete your profile and accept the terms of service

SafeZone will only share your location when asking for help or a check-in. It does not track you at other times to respect your privacy.

The app requires certain permissions to run, including “Location Sharing” to let UAPD know where you are if you ask for help; “Notifications” to help us get in touch with you if required; Make calls or send SMS from the app to make it easy to reach UAPD from within SafeZone; Fitness / Motion activity settings so battery use can be optimised (by location updates being reduced if you are stationary).
