Gilman Scholarships Available for Pell Grant Students to Study Abroad
University of Arkansas

Do you receive a Pell Grant? The Gilman  Scholarship for study abroad might be for you!

The U.S. Department of State's Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship enables U.S. students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad. This program has been successful in supporting students who have been historically underrepresented in education abroad, including but not limited to first-generation college students, students in STEM fields, ethnic minority students, students with disabilities, students attending HBCUs or other minority-serving institutions, and students coming from U.S. states with less study abroad participation. Additional funding is provided for the study of critical need languages (those deemed important to national security: Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Swahili, etc.).

Since last spring, 26 University of Arkansas students have been awarded between $3,000-$7,000 each, to study in countries like Italy, Australia, South Korea, Ireland, Thailand, and South Africa. Eligibility requirements are straightforward: applicants must receive a Pell Grant; be a U.S. citizen; be an undergraduate student; and participate on a 21-day program that is credit-bearing. Virtual international programs are included!

The Office of Study Abroad is hosting events every Monday through Thursday in February to help students learn about the Gilman scholarship. Join at noon any Monday or Tuesday for a general info session, drop-by Wednesdays from 1-4:30 p.m. for one-on-one application advising, or at noon on Thursdays for a group application workshop.

Join any of these sessions using this link: https://us.bbcollab.com/guest/b534467826c94a54b96d2c1aab11f122.

The next Gilman Scholarship deadline is at 11:59 p.m. PT (1:59 a.m. CT) March 2 , for in-person and virtual study abroad programs that start between May 1, 2021, and April 30, 2022. A team of study abroad advisors is ready to support your Gilman Scholarship application. Join the February events to learn more, discuss international program options, or review your application essay.
