Libraries to Present Fair Use Week Workshops

Join Lora Lennertz, data services librarian, for two virtual workshops in observation of Fair Use Week Feb. 22-26. These events are free and open to the public, and registration is required (links below).

According to the Fair Use Week website, "fair use and fair dealing are essential limitations and exceptions to copyright, allowing the use of copyrighted materials without permission from the copyright holder under certain circumstances."

The Basics of Copyright
Noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24

The University community interacts with copyright in a variety of ways. Presented via Zoom, this workshop will provide an overview of copyright legislation, fair use and open licensing.

  • The laws that form U.S. copyright

  • How to identify materials that are no longer under copyright

  • The elements of the fair use exception

  • The basics of open access licensing

Please note that this workshop will not cover author rights, patents or trademarks.

Applying Fair Use in the Classroom
Noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26

This year has required that we teach in a variety of modes. What was a difficult task — being copyright compliant — has become even more complicated. Join the Libraries on Microsoft Teams for an overview of copyright legislation and a discussion of fair use. Investigate some best practices for copyright compliance in your classroom.
