Bumpers College Honors Students Receive Grants for Research Projects

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Five honors students in U of A's Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences have been awarded support for their projects from the college's Undergraduate Research and Creative Project Grant Funding Program.

Grace Clark, Daniella Duran, Amber Knoernschild, Nicholas Pohlman and Emily Spatz have been awarded between $875 and $1,000 for their individual research.

Clark is an animal science major working with Lauren Thomas, clinical assistant professor and veterinarian. She received $900 in support of her project "Correlation of Reproductive Success and Bovine Anaplasmosis in Beef Cattle Herds in Arkansas."

Duran is also majoring in animal science and working under the guidance of Thomas. She received $1,000 for "Determination of Cytauxzoon felis Prevalence in Domestic Felines of Northwest Arkansas."

Knoernschild is majoring in human nutrition and dietetics in the School of Human Environmental Sciences, and is working with Department of Food Science associate professor of nutrition Jamie Baum. Knoernschild's grant is $1,000 for "CAMP: Children's Acceptance of Muffins with Different Proteins."

Pohlman is double-majoring in animal science and biochemistry, and working with animal science professor Fred Pohlman. His grant, $875, is for "Impact of Degree of Doneness and Fat Content on Quality and Sensory Characteristics of Ground Beef Patties."

Spatz is double-majoring in poultry science and Spanish, and working with Lisa Wood, clinical associate professor in the Department of Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences, and assistant dean for honors and international programs. Spatz's grant is $1,000 and is for "Using Poultry to Enhance Food Security in Stann Creek, Belize."
