For-Credit Summer Music Courses Available for All U of A Students

Do you need a fine arts or humanities credit? Do you want to learn more about music? Do you want to write your own songs? Then the Department of Music might have a class for you this summer!

The Department of Music in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences offers a variety of courses to the general student population each summer. For summer 2021, all classes are being taught remotely or fully online to maximize options for students wanting to study over the summer months. Most classes are taught in five-week schedules with a songwriter's class taught over eight weeks.

For core curriculum requirements, MLIT 1003 Experiencing Music counts as a fine arts credit. MUSY 2003 Music in World Cultures counts as a humanities credit. Songwriting is an elective course for anyone interested in learning the craft of songwriting or taking their current writing to the next level.

MLIT 1003 - Experiencing Music (counts as Fine Arts Credit)
Multiple Sections with Rick Salonen and Nikola Radan
Remote and Online Instruction — Survey course of classical and jazz music genres. Examines how music reflects and impacts culture while familiarizing students with various musical styles, forms and ideas. Develops listening skills and introduces basic music vocabulary and fundamentals. 

MLIT 1333 - Popular Music (counts as a Fine Arts Credit)
Multiple sections with Matthew Mihalka
Online Instruction — Survey course of popular music genres. Class covers the history of popular music during the 20th and 21st centuries within its social and cultural contexts. Examines the origins, evolution and stylistic features of prominent popular genres, such as country, rock, blues, hip hop and soul. 

MUSY 2003:001 - Music in World Cultures (counts as Humanities Credit)

Remote Instruction — Survey course of music from around the world. Examines the role of music in different social and cultural contexts. A variety of indigenous, folk, religious, popular and art music traditions will be explored, along with the people and cultures that create them. 

MUTH 477V:901 - Songwriting
Jake Hertzog and Kenny Lamb
Online Instruction — This hands-on class will be taught by U of A music faculty member Jake Hertzog and multi-platinum selling professional songwriter Kenny Lamb. In the course students will learn to compose songs in contemporary styles while learning to assess technical elements of song: lyrics, melody, form, production and style. Students will understand various methods of demo creation for songwriters and develop understanding of the processes by which songs are marketed to various music industry agents.
