Take Back the Night to Be Evening of Solidarity Against Sexual Violence

The Pat Walker Health Center and the Sexual and Relationship Violence Center will host its 19th annual Take Back the Night event on Thursday, April 22, at 7 p.m. Take Back the Night is part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month and is one of a number of events and activities scheduled for the remainder of April.

One year after having to go virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s Take Back the Night event will be in person at the Chi Omega Greek Theatre and will be part of the action and advocacy themed week. 

“Take Back the Night brings us together for an evening with hopes to empower all to carry its spirit throughout the year,” said Dr. Mary A. Wyandt-Hiebert, director of the Sexual and Relationship Violence Center. “Through a supportive environment, Take Back the Night gives agency for all to rise together against sexual violence. After 18 past consecutive Take Back the Night events on our campus, it never ceases to astonish me the support, empowerment and voice this affords our community.”

This year’s Take Back the Night will not have a march due to COVID-19 concerns but will continue to be an evening of solidarity against sexual violence. Fayetteville Mayor Lioneld Jordan will officially recognize the event with a proclamation, followed by an evening of varied events including featured speakers, a Speak Out, a moment of silence and more. 

Social distancing and mask wearing will be adhered to in accordance with the U of A and the Arkansas Department of Health’s COVID-19 guidelines.

As part of the showing of solidarity, Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium will also be lit in the color teal from 8-10 p.m. Thursday night. 

As SAAM events unfold, the university truly wishes wellness for the entire community. The university recognizes that individuals who have experienced sexual violence are at different points in their healing processes. So, for anyone who may personally struggle as SAAM events receive heightened attention, a reminder that confidential campus support resources include the Sexual and Relationship Violence Center and CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services), both of the Pat Walker Health Center. Assistance may also be sought through U of A Cares and the Title IX Office.

Incidents of sexual harassment, misconduct, assault and discrimination may be reported through report.uark.edu.
