Alexis Campbell, a U of A senior journalism student, is the recent recipient of an American Advertising Federation scholarship.

Campbell anticipates graduating this week summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism, with a concentration in advertising and public relations and a minor in marketing.

She serves as the director of special events on the Associated Student Government executive cabinet, vice president of programming for the Order of Omega Honors Society, social media assistant for the U of A chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America, and a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority.

Established in 1905, the AAF is the oldest national advertising trade association in the United States. Out of only eight scholarships awarded to college students from Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas, Alexis received $5,000 from the O. Joe Russell Scholarship, the second-highest amount awarded to a student.

Campbell submitted five pieces of work from her portfolio for scholarship consideration, including an insight report on the rebranding of Aunt Jemima's and Uncle Ben's consumer brands completed for assistant professor Lucy Brown's JOUR 5473 Account Planning class.

She also submitted a summary of her thesis work, which investigated how online alcohol advertisements affect young people. Assistant professor Jee Young Chung served as Campbell's mentor for her honors thesis and the poster, which recently placed third in the Undergraduate Research Week poster competition.

Additionally, Campbell submitted design work from her marketing internship at EasyBins, a local Northwest Arkansas startup and grocery delivery service. She included a document of advertising ideas and creative strategies for December, as well as mock-ups of holiday advertisements for social media and print advertisements. She also included an email advertisement sent to residents in the region featuring all the local products posted on the EasyBins' website.

Campbell will attend U of A in the fall semester to pursue a Master of Arts in journalism and will simultaneously be working as a graduate assistant for the School of Journalism and Strategic Media.
